12 Stocks to Buy

Some stocks that had strong fundamentals registered a trivial role in markets

This article first appeared in Wealth Insight magazine as its cover story, 12 STOCKS TO BUY, 50 TO SHUN.

Markets are known to tend towards sentimentality and react accordingly -- whether towards stability or instability depends on the news that it is responding to in a major manner. When the UPA government secured its second term, the markets did give it due respect and the Sensex gained by leaps and bounds, figuring that without a fractured mandate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be able to launch reforms in various sectors that were hitherto off-limits due to exigencies of coalition politics.

However, when Wealth Insight started taking stock of the markets, we found, unexpectedly, that a set of companies which had strong fundamentals, registered a very trivial role in the markets.

At the other extreme, we found that some of the worst performers of 2008 are the champions of this rally. In short laggards were leaders and vice versa.

In this exercise, we take a closer look at the companies that have the potential to do well over time and those who do not have the staying power, in other words, separating the wheat from the chaff, thereby giving you the opportunity to identify stocks worth buying. This exercise brought 12 stocks to the front and we will be showcasing the stocks one by one.
