It's not often that the street gets excited about a mass-market retailer. But Vishal Mega Mart just gave investors a reason to take a second look.
In its Q4 FY25 results, the value-focused chain posted an 88 per cent jump in profit, a 23 per cent rise in revenue and expanding margins. The stock surged nearly 10 per cent intraday, making it one of the day's top movers. Not bad for a company that's more associated with affordable basics than flashy headlines.
A numbers boost worth noticing
Net profit stood at Rs 115 crore, up sharply from Rs 61 crore a year ago. Revenue touched Rs 2,548 crore. But it's the margin story that's turning heads—EBITDA margin improved to 14 per cent, from 12.1 per cent last year. That's not easy in the cutthroat world of discount retail.
Vishal Mega Mart Q4 FY25 numbers
| Metric | Q4 FY25 | Q4 FY24 | YoY change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | Rs 2,547.9 crore | Rs 2,068.9 crore | ↑ 23.2 per cent |
| Net profit | Rs 115.1 crore | Rs 61.2 crore | ↑ 88.1 per cent |
| EBITDA margin | 14.0 per cent | 12.1 per cent | ↑ 190 bps |
| Same store sales growth | 13.7 per cent | ~8 per cent (est.) | ↑ |
| Store count | 696 stores | ~668 stores | +28 new stores |
What's driving it?
A mix of tighter cost controls, scale benefits and smarter sourcing. Add to that the fact that Vishal opened 28 new stores in the quarter—many in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities—and you've got a growth story with legs. Its total store count is now 668.
The stock's rally says one thing. Valuation says another.
The market liked what it saw. The stock is up 10 per cent, hitting Rs 118 today.
But there's a reality check in the fine print: Vishal Mega Mart's P/E stands at 86, which isn't cheap. But it's still lower than DMart's lofty 103 (data as of April 30, 2025).
So while the market is assigning Vishal a premium for its execution, there's a valuation gap that could keep sentiment buoyant—if it continues to deliver.

But it's not a one-horse race
Vishal's biggest challenge now is not just execution—it's competition. Reliance Retail continues to expand aggressively, DMart has loyal urban shoppers, and digital-first players are grabbing more wallet share every day.
Vishal may have the edge in small-town India with its no-frills, affordable model, but keeping the same-store growth ticking while opening new stores is a balancing act. One misstep on pricing, inventory, or customer experience and the gains can disappear.
Final take
Vishal Mega Mart is doing many things right: expanding smartly, improving margins and surprising the market with solid results. But in a business where margins are thin and rivals are many, the bar is always high.
