Paras Defence rises on stock split buzz. Should you jump in?

Paras Defence share price surges 11 per cent ahead of board meeting to consider stock split and dividend

It doesn't take much to light a fire in a hot stock. Paras Defence surged nearly 11 per cent on April 29, 2025, after announcing a board meeting to consider a stock split and a dividend.

For a company already popular among retail investors, that was enough to send shares flying. The stock touched Rs 1,279 intraday, building on an already spectacular run over the past two years.

But while the excitement is real, investors would do well to dig a little deeper before jumping in headfirst.

What's driving the excitement

Paras Defence is a poster child for India's "Make in India" and defence indigenisation theme. It operates in highly strategic areas—optics, electronics and defence engineering. In a market where "defence stocks" have become a buzzword, Paras offers the rare combination of visibility and niche expertise.

The company's decision to explore a stock split, typically seen as a positive sign of confidence, and to potentially announce a dividend is being read as a vote of strength.

Stock splits don't add fundamental value, but they often create a perception of affordability, attracting more retail buying.

Financials: Strong growth, but not flawless

For the quarter ended December 2024 (Q3 FY25), Paras Defence reported:

  • Net profit: Rs 13.85 crore, up 9 per cent quarter-on-quarter
  • Revenue: Rs 87.39 crore, slightly lower than Rs 88.76 crore last quarter

In other words, profitability improved, but topline momentum slowed. That's not a disaster, but it's a reminder that growth isn't always linear—even for companies riding strong sector tailwinds.

Margins held up well, supported by better product mix and operational leverage. However, the sequential revenue dip may hint at lumpiness in order execution—a common risk in defence manufacturing contracts.

The valuation point

This is where the red flags start to pop up. Paras Defence is currently valued at 93 times trailing earnings. Its peers are also expensive, but mostly not as much:

MTAR is even pricier, but it's seen as a high-tech manufacturing specialist with strong exports. HAL, a heavyweight with far more predictable cash flows, trades at a far cheaper multiple.

Final take

Paras Defence remains a strong structural story, a sharp product profile and a seat at India's defence growth table. However, from a medium- to long-term lens, valuations seem stretched. The stock price already reflects a lot of that optimism—and then some.

In the short term, the stock split announcement could continue to drive positive sentiment. Retail investors often chase splits, believing it makes the stock "cheaper," even though the intrinsic value remains unchanged.
