Let's begin with the banking crisis in March 2023. Do you think the reasons for the banks collapsing in the US varied, and what lessons can we learn from that in India?
No, the reasons are not varied. The collapse of a bank occurs when people lose confidence in it. The primary driver is the perception that the bank's assets are of lower value than its liabilities. This loss of confidence can lead to a run on the bank. We, in India, have faced similar challenges in the past, struggling with our own banking problems. Our experience has been a learning curve, and we've implemented reforms over the last decade to address these issues.
Moving on to inflation in July 2023, where India recorded 7.44 per cent. With rising costs and reduced purchasing power, what can investors do?
While 7.4 per cent inflation is high, it's not alarming or hyperinflation. It may be cyclical and likely to decrease. Indians are somewhat accustomed to 6-7 per cent inflation. Unlike the US, where inflation can have a significant impact due to their unfamiliarity with it, we should manage inflation by either reducing expenses or increasing income.
Now, debt funds lost indexation benefits in 2023. Does it still make sense to invest in debt funds?
Despite the loss of indexation benefits, debt funds offer diversification, liquidity, and no TDS. The convenience and liquidity of debt funds make them a viable option, especially for those in lower tax brackets.
Next, the FTX debacle in November 2023. Cryptocurrency, despite its baseless nature, saw significant gains. What precautions should investors take?
Cryptocurrency, particularly Bitcoin, has seen unjustified surges in value, leading to fraudulent activities and legal troubles. Investors should exercise caution, understanding the risks associated with cryptocurrencies. It's essential to avoid being the last investor holding an asset that could suddenly lose its value.
Moving on to IPOs, a hot topic in 2023 with massive inflows. What advice do you have for investors?
Small investors should use IPOs as opportunities to enhance their knowledge and continue with systematic investment plans (SIP). The lottery-like nature of IPO allotments is not recommended for investors. Use IPOs to learn about new companies, and if interested, consider investing after they are listed.
Then, there were geopolitical conflicts in 2023. Should investors consider such events when making investment decisions?
While conflicts can disrupt markets, it's crucial for investors to focus on long-term views, diversification, and disciplined investing. Use geopolitical events as opportunities to invest when markets panic, but ensure a balanced portfolio with both equity and fixed income.
Finally, 2023 witnessed volatile markets. What should investors take away from this?
Market volatility is part of the game. Whether it's 2021, 2022, or 2023, daily market movements can cause anxiety. However, a broader perspective reveals that markets tend to withstand challenges and move upward over time. Individual investors' confidence, reflected in mutual fund investments, indicates resilience in the market. The key takeaway is to stick to your investment plan and remain focused on your long-term goals.
