Summary: Mid-cap funds are known for their ‘high risk, high reward’ nature. But for investors who stayed the course, they have delivered rich gains over the long term. Here, we look at six mid-cap funds that turned a simple Rs 10,000 SIP into substantial wealth in just five years.
Mid-cap funds invest at least 65 per cent of their assets in mid-cap stocks, ranked 101-250 by market capitalisation. Wedged between the sturdy large-cap funds and fast-growing small-cap funds, mid-cap funds have managed to hold their ground, delivering nearly 21 per cent annualised returns over a five-year period.

Should you invest in mid-cap funds?
Despite their strong long-term performance, mid-cap funds have been struggling recently, owing to a broad market correction starting late 2024. Further, like their small-cap counterparts, mid-cap funds see phases of low or negative returns in the short term, though long-term returns remain impressive.
That said, invest in mid-cap funds only if you have a sufficient time horizon (at least 7-10 years) and don’t get rattled by near-term market shocks or downturns. Mid-cap funds need time and patience to deliver and so, they are suitable for those seeking high growth with a high risk appetite.
