Summary: Think all the value is gone from large caps? Think again. We found three market heavyweights that have more than doubled investor wealth in the last five years and still trade below 10x earnings. Find them below.

In the large-cap space, value is increasingly hard to find. These are the market’s most established businesses—dominant in their industries and well-followed by investors. Quality here rarely comes cheap.

Yet, our search for value in this hot market threw up three surprising outliers—large-cap stocks that remain reasonably priced even after delivering stellar returns over the past five years.

To arrive at them, we screened the large-cap universe for companies with a Valuation Score of seven or above (out of 10), as part of our stock-rating system—a level that signals comfort on the price front. Only three stocks made the cut. All three, interestingly, are energy PSUs.

Strong run and still comfortable valuations

Each of these PSU heavyweights have rallied between 100 and 300 per cent over the last five years, meaning they have doubled and even tripled investor wealth. And yet, these companies still trade at a P/E multiple of below 10 times—a rare blend of proven performance and low valuation.

To reiterate, these aren’t forgotten names; they’re credible, cash-rich giants that continue to compound steadily while staying attractively priced. In a market where value has become a rarity, these three PSUs prove that even among the blue chips, there could be room for discovery. Here’s a quick look at them:

Big guns on the value aisle

3) Bharat Petroleum Corporation

With a refining capacity of 35.3 MMTPA—about 15 per cent of India’s total—BPCL is an integrated energy major spanning refining, fuel retail, LPG, lubricants and gas distribution. As of January 2025, its domestic market sales of 51 MMT made up 25 per cent market share among PSUs. Its earnings per share (eps) has grown at a healthy 36 per cent per annum over five years, aided by strong refining margins. Yet, at just 8.7 times earnings, the stock remains attractively valued.

2) Coal India

Coal India is the world’s largest coal producer and produces about 80 per cent of India’s domestic output, with operations spanning eight states. Over 80 per cent of its dispatches serve the power sector. Earnings have grown steadily in recent years on the back of higher volumes led by a sharp demand surge for power consumption. Despite the stock more than doubling in five years, it still trades at just 13.8 times earnings.

1) Oil & Natural Gas Corporation

India’s largest oil and gas producer, ONGC accounts for nearly 70 per cent of domestic crude and 84 per cent of natural gas output. Strong realisations and volume recovery have driven EPS growth of 54 per cent annually over the last five years. With ongoing expansion in offshore fields, the stock remains inexpensive at 8.9x earnings.

Company Total 5Y returns (%) 5Y annual return (%pa) P/E 5Y median P/E 5Y EPS growth (%pa) 5Y avg ROCE (%)
ONGC 297 31 8.9 7.5 54.39 15.07
Coal India 245 28 13.8 6.9 18.53 58.48
BPCL 104 15 8.7 7.5 35.71 20.05
ROCE is return on capital employed. Returns and P/E data as of October 29, 2025

These three companies prove that coal, crude and gas may be the old guard of India’s growth story, but their spark hasn’t faded. With the economy’s energy appetite rising, these PSUs are still drawing investors confident in the energy theme.

The market may have already re-rated many state-run names. But as these three show, value pockets still exist—hidden in plain sight, inside India’s biggest public-sector champions.
