For Indian investors seeking geographical diversification, international mutual funds have been a convenient and a viable choice. But over the past couple of years, access to these funds has been restricted due to regulatory limits.
That's right, there are limits imposed on how much the Indian mutual fund industry could invest abroad.
The limits are as follows:
-
The entire
mutual fund
industry can invest only up to $7 billion in foreign equities.
-
Individual fund houses can invest up to $1 billion.
- In addition, for overseas ETFs, there's a $1 billion ceiling (industry-wide) and $300 million (fund-house-wise) ceiling.
While the overall industry was nearing this ceiling, markets regulator SEBI, in 2022, allowed individual AMCs to continue accepting fresh investments to the extent of the unused portion of their $1 billion fund-house-wise limits. That's why selected international mutual funds have remained open for subscription, depending on the headroom available with them, while others had to pause or restrict inflows.
Edelweiss Mutual Fund relaxes daily rule
Edelweiss Mutual Fund is one of those fund houses. In fact, they recently increased the daily subscription cap for several of its international schemes, effective April 17, 2025. The limit, earlier capped at Rs 1 lakh per PAN per day, has now been raised to Rs 10 lakh.
The revised subscription limits apply to the following Edelweiss schemes:
-
ASEAN Equity Off-shore Fund
-
Greater China Equity Off-shore Fund
-
US Technology Equity Fund of Fund
-
Emerging Markets Opportunities Equity Offshore Fund
-
Europe Dynamic Equity Offshore Fund
-

Including the above seven, there are 31 global funds accepting fresh investments. They are:
