Bulls started off the week in style as markets ended the day in positive territory. Firm cues from the Asian markets coupled with strong buying momentum in the index stocks helped. The key indices faced stiff resistance as profit booking dragged the markets down mid-afternoon session. But bulls made a strong come back led by gains in the heavyweights like RCom, RIL, Infosys and SBI.
After opening in red on Tuesday, the markets turned choppy and lackluster and witnessed range bound trades. However, towards the fag end markets rose slightly led by gains in RIL, HDFC Bank, L&T and Bharti Airtel. Finally, the market closed flat in positive territory.
On Wednesday, the bears had the final say. The markets opened with a negative gap mirroring losses in the equity markets across US and Asia. However, after a sharp dip key indices managed to recover gradually from its day low. Among the 30-scrips of Sensex, Infosys, RIL, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel and HDFC were among the major laggards. On the other hand, REL, RCOM, Cipla and ACC were among the major gainers.
Just as sentiment was beginning to get better, the bears prevailed. The market closed lower on Thursday and Friday. The report that India's economy is estimated to expand (just) 8.7%, the weakest pace since 2005, added to the low sentiment. The growth was at 9.6% in the last financial year.
Compared with last week's close, only 6 Sensex stocks gained. Ranbaxy was the biggest gainer (6.30%) and Maruti Suzuki was the biggest loser (-11.15%). Compared to Monday's close, all the BSE sectoral indices closed in negative territory.
