Summary: Months after Edelweiss paused SIPs in its international funds, investors finally have an answer, just not the one they were waiting for. The fund house has opened a different door abroad instead. What happens to your SIP now, and is the new route really the same trip?
Edelweiss Mutual Fund made two very different calls on October 21. In its MSCI India Domestic & World Healthcare 45 Index Fund, it will take fresh money from October 26 and restart paused SIPs on November 20, if it has room under its overseas limit. In its six international funds, it has cancelled the paused SIPs outright. They "shall not be reactivated", the notice says.
Why the limit? SEBI caps how much each fund house can invest abroad at its level of February 2022, so new money gets in only when there is room under that cap.
Restarting means a new SIP
The six are the ASEAN, Greater China, US Technology, Emerging Markets Opportunities, Europe Dynamic and US Value funds, all shut to new money since July. If you had a SIP or a transfer plan in any of them, you would need a new one, and Edelweiss has given no date for that. Money already invested stays, and you can withdraw it.
Edelweiss picked a healthcare fund instead
It's an index fund copying 45 healthcare companies. As of September 30, 54 per cent sat in Indian companies that make medicines or the raw ingredients for them, such as Sun Pharma and Divi's Laboratories, and 14 per cent in hospital chains such as Apollo and Max. The other 31 per cent was in 20 US-listed companies, mostly drug makers like Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson, plus makers of medical equipment and lab tools. It made 13 per cent in the last 12 months, and 19 and 14 per cent a year over three and five years.
Last week, we left it off our list of domestic funds with over 10 per cent abroad only because it was shut. From Monday, it qualifies.
Among the 60 international funds, nothing else changed. Five still take new money, as the table shows.

Premiums on US ETFs cooled
An ETF trades on the stock exchange like a share, so its price can drift above the value of what it owns. That gap is its premium.
Between October 14 and 21, premiums fell on all four ETFs holding US shares and rose on both holding Hong Kong shares. The Mirae Asset S&P 500 Top 50 ETF went from 59 to 54 per cent and the Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ ETF from 60 to 52 per cent. The Mirae Asset Hang Seng TECH ETF went the other way, to 35 per cent, its highest in a year.
The Motilal Oswal Nasdaq Q50 ETF moved most. Its price fell 8.1 per cent while the shares it owns rose 1.7 per cent, cutting the premium from 112 to 91 per cent. Fewer people are chasing it. Daily trading averaged Rs 13.5 crore this week, against Rs 34.4 crore last week and Rs 79.5 crore in the week its premium peaked at 235 per cent.

So what now?
Five international funds will take your money at the value of what they own, with no premium. From Monday, the Edelweiss healthcare fund is another way abroad, though it bets on one industry. If your SIP was in one of the six Edelweiss funds, decide where that money should go now.
ETFs remain a costly way in. The Nasdaq Q50 still costs almost twice what its shares are worth, and when a premium shrinks, you can lose money even if the market doesn't fall. We'll check again next week.
A cancelled SIP is a good time to ask whether that fund belonged in your plan. Value Research Fund Advisor looks at what you own and plans the rest around your goals.
