Last month, I started what I called was a walkthrough of Value Research Premium. Our Premium service has many parts and my goal is to familiarise you with all of them, major as well as minor.
So, for this month, let me ask you the most basic question possible: why do you come to Value Research Online?
Of course, the answers are as varied as the mutual funds and equity information and analyses on the website. I'll narrow it down to a more focussed question: why did you come to Value Research Online for the first time?
Many of you first came to Value Research so long ago that you may not remember. However, I have a good idea. Based on the search information on our site and through Google, we know that most people first come to Value Research to look for a specific mutual fund. Typically, either they are searching for something like 'best equity fund', 'best tax-saving fund', or 'good fund for income', or they type in the name of a specific mutual fund and they are looking for information and analysis about that fund.
Nothing surprising here, so far. Ours is the most trusted source in India for mutual fund data and analysis and obviously, people will first come here looking for information on mutual funds. Once they are here, they get hooked on other features like the Portfolio Manager, the educational content and videos, etc., but the initial driver is always an urgent need to get to know more about a type of mutual fund or some specific mutual funds. So far, so good. That's what we are here for.
However, it is an unfortunate fact that the official 'types' of funds that exist in India do not map on to the actual investing needs that you have. First of all, we need to start solving the problem of the enormous number of mutual funds that are there for the Indian investor.
Categorisation is always a way to solve such problems of plenty. However, as I said, while there is an official, detailed classification system for funds based on where the funds invest, we need a separate one to serve your needs. For Value Research Premium, we have created something different based on your investing goals and needs. This is a considerable evolution of the tried-and-tested framework that Value Research has historically had. For example, we have always had the Value Research star-rating system that divides almost all funds into five quality tiers, but these five tiers are contained within the normal (SEBI-influenced) system of categorising funds. Those categories are a tremendously powerful research tool and represent the ideal way of dividing funds according to where they invest.
Even so, these categories are, by necessity, not structured according to your investment needs. If you want the highest possible returns from your funds, the research-oriented categorisation system cannot provide a set called 'aggressive growth funds'. However, that's the kind of utility that can be provided by Value Research Premium.
Analysts' Choic
In Value Research Premium, in the Analysts' Choice section, we have eight goal-oriented classes:
- Aggressive growth
- Growth
- Tax planning
- Growth - international
- Conservative growth
- Conservative growth & income
- Short-term/core fixed income
- Capital preservation

The names are self-explanatory. What's most important is that there is no individual whose investment needs cannot be met by some combination of these. In Analysts' Choice, we have selected a total of 44 funds distributed under these heads. These are all you need to create a portfolio of mutual funds that is suited to any investing purpose.
Not just that, each section comes with clearly stated guidelines as to what these funds are intended for and how investors should invest in them. All in all, this is the ultimate culmination of the goals you had when you first came to Value Research Online.
A lot more
Of course, this is just one part of the detailed walkthrough I'm doing through the major features of Value Research Premium. There are other useful features as well, such as:
Portfolio Planner: These are custom portfolios that are suggested to you as part of your Premium membership. The algorithm that we have evolved takes into account your goals, your income, your saving capacity and a number of other factors.
Portfolio Analysis: While some members may be starting from scratch, a big question for others is whether your existing investments fit into your goals? This is often a hard question to answer because there are a lot of implications of switching old investments, not the least of which is taxation. In the Premium system, you can get an evaluation and a suggested fix-list based on our expert teams' inputs.
And these are just headline features. There are a lot more that will help you keep track of your investments, returns, taxation and practically everything else that will help you achieve your financial goals. Take a look at Value Research Premium for the full details.
