How long is long term?

Equity funds deliver their best returns over the long term. The Sensex delivered about 12.7% over the past five years. However the individual one year periods yielded about 9%, 41.8%, -8.9%, 16.2% and 9.5%. Anyone looking for a quick one-year buck might've well landed himself with a mediocre 9.5% or a devastating -8.9%.
