Companies with the highest profits in their sectors

We bring you a number of companies that dominate their industry profits. But these are not automatic buys

Of the 1000 cell phone manufacturers across the globe, Apple Inc. takes away a massive 92 per cent of worldwide mobile phone industry profits.

There are a number of reasons why Apple can pull such a feat - a high quality product, a techie's delight, a marketing genius or just, show-off value of its iphones. Whatever the combination of reasons, what matters is that Apple scoops up nearly the entire industry profits.

That set us out in search of our very own Apples! Not the largest companies, not companies with or without competitive advantages, not the fastest, nor the in-vogue, but companies that dominate their respective industry profits. For example, our very own Lakshmi Machine Works takes in 93 per cent of the textile machinery manufacturing industry profits. Tata Motors takes in a similar share of the truck manufacturing industry profits in India.

There are a number of companies that dominate their industry profits. We bring to you such companies categorized into how entrenched their share of profits in their respective industry are. We have considered the latest trailing twelve-month net profits available at the time of writing.

A word of caution. The companies figuring here are not an automatic recommendation to buy. This story simply illustrates industry dynamics, how much the biggest profit gulpers take home and how the industry profits are divided.

  1. Companies that have no competition
  2. Companies operating with wide margins
  3. Companies that club industry profits
  4. Close call companies
  5. Sectors with fragmented profits
