Distribution is key

We have to make investors realise that by not investing in mutual funds they lose an opportunity of creating wealth over a long time, says Deepak Kumar Chatterjee of SBI Mutual Fund

A 25-year history in asset management along with a strong SBI branding and reach gives SBI MF a high presence beyond the top-15 cities. Deepak Kumar Chatterjee, the MD and CEO, rues that investors don't look at mutual funds as investment options. At the same time he is confident that the situation will improve and mutual fund assets will also grow, as sentiments improve. To tap investors, the AMC has plans to open 50 branches beyond the top-15 cities in the coming months to attract more retail investors.

On the investor education front, the fund house has started a campaign through its 'Fund Guru' mascot in nine different languages. This year, the fund house has so far held over 250 investor meets in tier II and tier III centres. Chatterjee views the distributor as the link between the product manufacturer and the investors, who plays a crucial role. Initiatives to train distributors are being undertaken with XLRI, SBI and National Institute of Securities Market (NISM) as partners to help mutual funds become a popular investment vehicle.
