House Voice

Making a restart

There are enough investors in urban and non-urban centers who understand mutual funds perfectly, but will still not invest, says Harsha Viji of Sundaram Mutual Fund

A change of guard at the top a little over a year ago has resulted in a change in the Sundaram Mutual Fund's orientation. From a largely retail focused fund house with mostly equity fund offerings, it now has a wide range of products across assets to cater to corporates, HNIs and retail investors across the country.

Part of the Sundaram Finance group, the AMC has been retail and rural focused with over 500 points of presence, with a majority of them outside metros across India. Further, these investors are serviced through retail banks, national and individual distributors.

Harsha Viji, the MD, believes in practising the asset allocation game by dividing his investments across land, gold and financial assets in which mutual funds have a critical place. He feels mutual funds are just a better version of banks, with several products that can substitute what banks offer.

The AMC has always taken a tempered and balanced view to growth, which reflects in its performance, where it has been continuously profitable for the past six years.

Total assets: Rs 13,947 crore, Net Profit: Rs 16.86 crore
