At some point, life asks for cash. A medical bill. A home down-payment. A gap between jobs, or simply a large expense you always knew was coming. And when it does, the money often has to come from the one place you have been patiently building: your investments.

Here is the strange part. An entire industry exists to help you put money in. Advisors, apps, agents, and endless articles on which fund to buy next. Almost no one tells you how to take money out. So when the moment arrives, most people are left to work it out alone, usually in a hurry, often at the worst possible time.

And selling is not a small thing. It is a decision with consequences. Sell the wrong fund and you can trigger a tax bill you never needed to pay. Sell without thinking and you can quietly upset the balance between equity and debt in your portfolio. Raise the cash from the fund that has grown the most, and you may be cutting down your best long-term compounder to meet a short-term need.

So the real questions are the ones nobody prepares you for. When you need money, do you even have to sell at all? And if you do, which fund should you touch first, and which should you protect at all costs?

Most people answer these by instinct. They sell whatever is easiest to redeem, or whatever happens to be up the most that week. Both can be exactly the wrong move. There is a calmer way to decide, one that weighs the tax, your overall balance, and the goal the money was meant for, and settles them into a simple order you can actually follow.

That order is what Dhirendra Kumar and I are going to walk through at this month’s Fund Advisor Live. We will start with whether you can meet the need without selling anything, and then, if you must sell, exactly how to choose what goes and what stays.

If you have ever looked at your portfolio and wondered which fund to break into for a sudden need, this session is for you.
