Vishal Mega Mart, one of India's largest hypermarket chains, is having a moment—both on the stock charts and on social media timelines.

Profits up, stock up

The company reported a robust set of numbers for the quarter ending March 2025. Net profit jumped a striking 88 per cent year-on-year to Rs 115.11 crore, while revenue rose 23 per cent to Rs 2,547.89 crore. The stock responded with a 10 per cent rally on April 30, 2025, closing at Rs 118.40 per share.

This performance builds on a strong Q3, when profit rose 28 per cent to Rs 262.71 crore and revenue grew 20 per cent. The company currently operates 668 stores across 432 cities, covering 11.8 million square feet.

Since its Rs 8,000 crore IPO in December 2024, the stock has been on a volatile but upward journey. Analyst sentiment is upbeat: Morgan Stanley has an "overweight" rating with a target of Rs 161—suggesting a 58 per cent upside—while Kotak and ICICI Securities also see value in the company's focus on tier-2 to tier-4 markets and its fast-growing private label business, which now accounts for 27 per cent of FMCG sales.

Expansion plans are equally aggressive, with new stores planned in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Full-year FY25 profit grew 36.8 per cent to Rs 631.97 crore, cementing Vishal Mega Mart's position as a retail force to reckon with.

"Ek hi sapna": From cash counters to cultural capital

But even as the company posts stellar earnings, it's gone viral for an entirely different reason: memes.

In mid-May, Indian social media lit up with a meme trend titled "Ek hi sapna - Vishal Mega Mart security guard." It began with a video of uniformed employees making reels during a recruitment drive, and exploded into a national meme moment. Instagram and X were flooded with humorous takes on aspiring security guards "preparing" for jobs at Vishal, mock coaching centres, and tongue-in-cheek motivational slogans. The meme fest pokes fun at both aspirational job culture and India's obsession with employment "stability."

The trend's momentum coincides with Vishal Mega Mart's real-life mass hiring campaign for security guards, lending it a bizarre but timely relevance. It's rare for a retail chain's recruitment drive to inspire meme-worthy pop culture status—but here we are.

A rare blend of margin and meme

Vishal Mega Mart's dual visibility—on earnings charts and trending hashtags—makes it a retail stock to watch. Whether it's analysts crunching numbers or netizens chasing memes, the buzz around Vishal is unmistakably real.
