Don't Go Heavy On Mid-caps

A portfolio that is tilted towards mid-caps can be a risky prospect. Ensure it's well diversified

I want to start an SIP for Rs 5,000/ month. I have picked HDFC Top 200 and IDFC Premier Equity Plan A. Can you suggest one more? My current investments are in Reliance Vision, SBI Infrastructure Fund Series I, ICICI Prudential Infrastructure, Sundaram BNP Paribas Select Midcap. Should my third pick be from this selection or should I exit these funds?

At the onset, we would like to suggest to you to visit our website, www.valueresearchonline.com. Enter your investments in the My Portfolio tool. You will then see that your investments are probably too tilted towards mid caps. Below are our suggestions.

Categories  Schemes  Action Points
Infrastructure SBI Infrastructure Fund Series I This is a closed-end fund. Sell on maturity.
ICICI Prudential Infrastructure Avoid fresh investments in this fund.
Large Cap DSPBR Top 100 Equity Consider these funds to get some sort of large cap exposure to your overall portfolio. Rs 2,000/month as SIP in each.
 IDFC Imperial Equity Plan A
Large & Mid Cap HDFC Top 200 Invest Rs 1,000/month as SIP.
 Reliance Vision Consider exiting.
Mid & Small Cap Sundaram BNP P Sel Midcap A good pick but fresh/further investments into them will lead to a strong mid-cap tilt.
 IDFC Premier Equity Plan A
