Best Close for Sensex in 13 Months

The index closed the month with a resounding rally

On the last trading day for the week, and the month, Indian markets kept up their winning momentum for the second straight day with Sensex rising by 282 points to close at a 13-month high of 15,670.31 points, while Nifty cruised past the 4,600-point mark to close the day out with a gain of 65 points at 4,636.45 points.

Sensex had closed at 15,696.90 points on June 17, 2008.

The index' gains for the week were 1.9 per cent.

The instigators of the upsurge were the good quarterly numbers that were flowing out of Indian corporate world (most companies have posted results that have surpassed nearly all analysts’ estimates), rising inflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) as well as soaring global markets -- US and Japan markets were at new highs for 2009.

The latest quarterly results sentiment lifters were those of the State Bank of India and Mahindra & Mahindra on Thursday. While SBI net was up 42 per cent, M&M reported that its profit after tax was up 151.7 per cent.

On Sensex, out of the 30 stocks, 24 gained, the lowest being Tata Power with a 0.1 per cent gain and the highest being Tata Motors, with a 7.1 per cent gain. The highest/lowest points reached by Sensex were 15,733/15,388, while the 52-week high/low of the index is 15,577/8,104 (for Nifty it is: 4,657/2,526.

In short, Sensex managed to beat its 52-week high closing mark.

Among the six losers on the index, the biggest loser was Bharti Airtel, which fell by 3 per cent, while the loser by the smallest margin was TCS with a 0.4 per cent loss.

The most active stocks by volume were Hindalco, DLF, Tata Steel Jaiprakash Asso., and Reliance Communication.

Except for realty all sector indices ended in green.
