Sensex Rises by 494 Points

After stalling on Thursday, the index ended the week with a flourish

Indian stock markets were on a high on Friday on the back of positive sentiment being derived out of better news flowing from the quarterly results being unveiled by corporates, as well as global cues being positive, with both the Dow Jones and Nasdaq closing up by 96 and 22 points respectively yesterday.

Most Asian bourses closed for the day in green and the European markets too were trading in positive territory.

Sensex climbed up by as much as 494.67 points to 14,744.92, a gain of 3.47 per cent, with investors and traders believing that more good news is likely to come next week.

The last time Sensex came anywhere close to jumping as much in a single day was on May 27, 2009, when it gained 520.41 points.

While India Inc had lit the fire on Friday, yet the factor that turned it into an inferno were the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) with small-caps and mid-caps hogging the limelight.

Nifty too jumped by 143.55 points to 4,374.95, a gain of 3.39 per cent fro the day.

The rally was fuelled by a big spread of stocks with 1,832 stocks gaining and 825 losing on the BSE.
