Pranab Mukherjee to be Finance Minister

As expected, P Chidambaram hasn’t made the comeback to finance in the new cabinet

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh started giving shape to his cabinet today by assigning a clutch of major portfolios. Pranab Mukherjee, 73, was given the finance ministry. Mukherjee was expected to be the new FM, specially since he presented the interim budget back in February.

Long-time FM Chidambaram, who was shifted to home in the wake of Shivraj Patil’s resignation following the Mumbai attacks, stays on in the home ministry. 

The other economically important portfolios that were announced today were Railways for Mamata Banerjee, and Agriculture, Food & Civil Supplies for Sharad Pawar.

Defence stays with A. K. Antony and S.M. Krishna is to be the new Foreign Minister.
