The Tata Mystery, Solved

In less than two years, Cyrus Mistry has not only managed to consolidate the Tata Group, he has also managed to achieve growth

The Tata group has seen several changes in the near two years since Cyrus Mistry took charge, with consolidations and even write-offs. There is also a lot of good news; in 2014, TCS became India's first company to top ₹5 lakh crore market cap. We analysed the performance of the listed companies under the Tata Group as a whole since Mistry took over in December 2012.

Going by the aggregate numbers, the group has excelled under his leadership and has witnessed rise in growth and efficiency. The table with the aggregate financials and ratios of the listed companies of the group indicates that the group has managed to push up the profits by 65 per cent. Not only on the aggregate basis but individually, Mistry was able to increase profits in 20 of 28 companies. On the not so rosier front; Mistry also took several tough calls, which over all included huge write-offs on account of restructuring to the tune of ₹3,553 crore. This amounted to 14 per cent of the profits before taxes of the companies which underwent restructuring.
