In the competitive mobile telephony market, Airtel, is facing problems since its expansion into Africa, whereas home-focused Idea has been thriving

Bharti Airtel
Bharti Airtel's telecom business is spread across 20 countries in Asia and Africa. With 287 million customers, Airtel is globally the 4th largest telecom operator and the largest in India in subscriber terms. Along with cellular services the company is also into fixed line, broadband, IPTV and DTH services. However, the company is facing fall in profits due to its international expansions, which it is yet to consolidate.

Idea Cellular
This Aditya Birla group company, is the 3rd largest mobile operator in India with 138 million subscribers. In contrast to Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular operates only in the wireless services space. Idea has been the biggest gainer of the number portability services, which started in 2011. Despite intense competition in this sector, Idea has maintained its strong position with its strong advertising and brand recall.

Bharti and Idea operate in an industry which is very intensely competitive. While Airtel has expanded its operations into Africa, it is struggling in terms of profitability due to regulatory issues, therefore dragging down the consolidated profits and margins. In contrast, Idea has focused its operations across India and only in the wireless segment, thereby reaping the spoils of better profitability and growth than Bharti. This Is due to focus and simplicity of its operations.
