Health insurance for the elderly

Select a plan with lifelong renewal because buying insurance at older age is difficult in case you develop an ailment

I am a healthy 59 year old without any pre-existing ailments. Earlier I was protected by a cover from my employer and never had a reason to claim medical expenses for self. Can you please suggest a reasonable mediclaim policy that will cover accidents as well?

Being physically fit and healthy will be an advantage while buying insurance at this age. Although you are on the threshold of being recognised as a senior citizen, at 59 you are not eligible for most of the good senior citizen policies. You can select a plan that offers lifelong renewal because buying insurance at older age becomes a herculean task in case you develop an ailment. Apollo Munich Easy Health Plan, Star Citizen Red Carpet, Apollo Munich Optima Senior and ICICI Lombard Complete Health Insurance- iHealth Plan are decent policies. Check the premium rates at your age and select one that suits your budget.

For accidental insurance, you will have to take a standalone Personal Accident policy because there is no health policy that covers personal accidents. Again you should check policy renewal age and coverage before buying one. For instance some policies may cover only for accidental death while others may offer temporary or permanent disability benefits as well. Evaluate your needs and select a cover. Apollo Munich Individual Personal Accident, Max Bupa Health Assurance- Personal Accident, National Insurance Personal Accident and United India Personal Accident are few good policies. Among these plans, Max Bupa offers lifelong renewal.
