Shying Away

The uncertain environment looming over the Indian stock market has kept the retail investor uninterested in the equity market

Retail investors are keeping away from the equity stock market. At least the number of shareholders of BSE-500 companies say so.

The number of retail shareholders has declined for the first time in the last six years (Since 2007 we had the data available). The stock market uncertainties are keeping away the retail investors whereas the number of foreign institutional investors, domestic institutional investors and foreign promoters have risen over the past year. Indian promoters have come down both in terms of percentage holding and numbers due to dilutions.
