'We bring a private equity approach to mutual funds'

An exclusive conversation with Madhu Lunawat, Founder, CEO & MD, The Wealth Company Mutual Fund

‘We bring a private equity approach to mutual funds’

Model-driven vs human-led portfolios?

We are a 100 per cent fund manager-led AMC. Models are for those who want to play it safe and follow the herd. We’re not here to be another cookie-cutter fund house. We bring a private equity mindset to mutual funds—deep research, face-to-face meetings with management, understanding business DNA and assessing leadership under stress. No algorithm can tell you if a promoter has the vision to build a sustainable business or will crumble when things go south.

Your first fund and trust playbook?

Our maiden fund is a flexi-cap fund, and that choice was deliberate. Markets move in cycles. Why box ourselves into artificial constraints when we can chase opportunity wherever it lies? We’re also launching an Ethical Fund built on the timeless principles of ahimsa.

Here’s how we’re different: I’m the first Indian woman to independently set up a mutual fund house. We don’t just read balance sheets, we talk to suppliers, distributors and customers. We’ll build a diversified portfolio of 45–50 conviction bets. Quality over quantity, always.

Trust isn’t built through fancy ads. It’s built through authenticity and empowerment. We’re training men and women in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to become financial advisers—‘MF Didis’ and ‘MF Dosts’—who deeply understand their communities. When women rise, India rises.

On low-friction investing and investor churn.

Digital investing has made redemption far too easy. Investors are exiting within 12–18 months when they should be staying for 5–7 years.

We’re not chasing this trend with quick-fix products or gimmicks. We’re going back to basics—education and relationships. Our distributor partners are having real conversations with investors about compounding and discipline. We’re using tech to enable better conversations. Because the best investment strategy is the one you can stick with.

Rapid-fire questions

  • One AMC you admire (not yours): Parag Parikh Mutual Fund.
  • One hot trend you’re glad to have skipped for your investors: Loss-making companies that just play on predatory pricing and thematic funds whose strategies are not fit for long-term wealth creation.
  • One fund manager, past or present, you would love to have on your team: Charlie Munger.
  • Beyond returns, one criterion you want investors to judge your AMC on: Democratising wealth creation and empowering women.
  • If not running an AMC, what would you be doing? Breaking barriers, empowering next-gen and building a more inclusive financial ecosystem.
