Summary: Which Indian small caps would Buffett pick if he were investing today? We applied his efficiency lens to the small-cap universe and shortlisted 4 intriguing names. Find them below.
When Warren Buffett sizes up a business, he isn’t swayed by flashy growth promises. Instead, he has a famously simple lens: does the company turn every rupee of shareholder money into solid returns and does it do so consistently without stumbling?
In Buffett’s world, efficiency is the bedrock of durability. A company that can squeeze more profits from each unit of equity is one that compounds wealth quietly, year after year. But what truly excites him is not just high returns in a good year but the ability to sustain those returns even in tough times. That reliability, in his view, separates a merely good business from an extraordinary one.

Taking a cue from this philosophy, we went hunting in India’s small-cap space, a zone where hidden gems often lurk but risks run equally high. We applied the below Buffett-style filter to companies in the Rs 500-10,000 crore market cap range.
- Consistent returns on equity (ROE) and returns on capital employed (ROCE) above 20 per cent in each of the last five years.
This left us with 21 companies that passed the test of a long-term track record of efficiency.
But high quality alone isn’t enough. You also need a reasonable price tag. So, from this shortlist, we picked four names that scored best on our Valuation Score to ensure reasonable valuation.
Here’s a quick look at these four potential Buffett-style bets in the small-cap universe.
