Sectoral funds concentrate risk

Sectoral funds can only be a minuscule part of your portfolio, switch to diverse funds to avoid sectoral volatility...

I invested Rs 1,000 in Reliance Diversified Power Sector fund through SIP for four years and stopped in November 2011. The total amount invested is Rs 49,000. Please suggest any other Reliance fund where I can make some profit at the earliest, as my current holding is giving negative returns.

Sector funds are riskier than normal equity diversified funds as their performance is linked to the performance of a single sector. Exit the fund if it is the only fund in your portfolio and invest in a diversified equity fund. Your returns in the fund are negative because you invested at a time (2007 end or 2008 beginning) when its performance was at its peak. Few diversified fund of Reliance Mutual Fund with four or five-star rating are- Reliance Regular Savings fund, Reliance Quant Plus, Reliance NRI Equity and Reliance Top 200.

Investments in equities are not for short-term so, stay invested in the fund for at least five years.
