Fresh off a Rs 159.79 crore contract win from Central Railway, the PSU's stock surged nearly 9 per cent in intraday trade. For a stock that's been sliding for months, this bounce caught investor attention. But is this a sign of a turnaround or just another flash in the pan?

About the company

Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) , a key player in India's railway infrastructure push, executes high-value projects like electrification, doubling, metro works and more. It operates under the Ministry of Railways and has lately emerged as a preferred contractor for electrification and high-load freight corridors.

What happened

On May 15, RVNL received a Letter of Acceptance from Central Railway for a contract worth nearly Rs 160 crore. The task? Upgrading the electric traction system in the Itarsi-Amla section of the Nagpur division. The shift to a 2x25 KV auto transformer setup will allow the route to handle heavier freight loads—up to 3,000 metric tonnes.

The upgrade is expected to be executed over 24 months and is a part of Indian Railways' broader plan to modernise busy freight corridors.

The market reaction

Investors cheered the news. RVNL's stock spiked over 9 per cent to Rs 411 on the BSE at the time of writing. Volumes were strong too—another sign of renewed interest.

The company has had a rough patch lately, falling over 40 per cent from its all-time high in July 2024. But contract wins like this one could offer some much-needed support and help reverse sentiment, especially if execution remains strong.

Value Research Online ratings

Rating category Score
Overall rating ⭐⭐ (2/5)
Quality score 5/10
Growth score 8/10
Valuation score 2/10
Momentum score 5/10

This suggests that RVNL has decent growth potential but scores low on quality, valuation and momentum, making it a risky bet despite recent contract wins.

Final word

A Rs 160 crore order may not be a gamechanger, but it's a strong signal in the right direction. RVNL has been steadily expanding its presence beyond core railway projects—into metros, roads and defence infrastructure. That diversification, combined with regular contract wins, gives it momentum.

But as always, execution is key. PSU infra stocks often rally on news but fade when delivery stumbles or margins disappoint. For this rally to sustain, RVNL must not only keep winning orders but also deliver on time and with discipline. Otherwise, this could end up as just another spike in a choppy ride.
