SBI Life's Q4 FY25 numbers were steady, not spectacular.
Net profit rose just 0.3 per cent to Rs 813 crore, and total premium income actually fell 5 per cent year-on-year. At first glance, that's hardly the stuff rallies are made of.
Yet the stock surged over 4 per cent. Why?
Because in the life insurance business, the real story lies beneath the headline profit. And SBI Life gave investors just enough reasons to stay optimistic.
The numbers: Mixed bag
- Net profit: Rs 813.5 crore (flat YoY)
- Net premium income: Rs 23,861 crore (-5 per cent YoY)
- Single premium: Down 42 per cent
- First-year premium: Rs 4,859 crore (+7.3 per cent)
- Renewal premium: Rs 14,680 crore (+13 per cent)
- AUM: Rs 4.48 lakh crore (+15 per cent YoY)
The profit miss was largely due to weaker single-premium inflows. But the uptick in first-year and renewal premiums—the stickier, long-term parts of the business—was a relief.
What's working for SBI Life
- High persistency: The 13th-month ratio rose to 86.6 per cent, and the 61st-month ratio improved to 61.5 per cent. That's a strong sign customers are staying on.
- Solid margins: Value of New Business (VNB) margin held at 27.8 per cent—among the best in the industry.
- Consistent execution: AUM is growing at a healthy clip, and over 94 per cent of debt investments are AAA or sovereign-rated, and risk is well-managed.
- Solvency ratio: At 1.96, well above the regulatory requirement.
Put simply, the quality of earnings is improving, even if the headline number didn't.
So why the stock jump?
Because the Street wasn't looking at net profit, it was looking at underlying growth and operational strength.
Despite the fall in total premium (mostly due to single-premium volatility), the business mix is improving, retention is strong, and future earnings look more predictable.
Add to that:
- Analysts are bullish—Nomura and Nuvama both have 'Buy' ratings with targets of Rs 1,800-1,890
- Return on embedded value is now at 20.2 per cent
- In a volatile market, insurers are seen as stable plays with long-term compounding potential
Final take
SBI Life isn't blowing past expectations. It, however, boasts stable metrics, high customer retention and a clean balance sheet. These factors may continue to keep SBI Life on the market's radar.
