Of the Rs 6,98,938 crore that mutual funds manage (June 2012), 26 per cent of the assets are in equity schemes and the rest in non-equity schemes. When we divide this data into two broad categories of assets' age and investor classification, what emerges is that retail investors have the biggest chunk of equity assets while corporates come on top in non-equity assets. Also, equity is the favoured route for long-term investment.
