Riding Infrastructure

Thematic and sector funds have a narrow focus, be aware of the risks that these pose

I am 30 and invested in ICICI Infrastructure fund in April 2008, however, the fund has not fared well in the past two years. Should I continue in this fund or switch over to some diversified fund with the same fund house?

Investing in a sector or thematic fund is risky. If this was your first mutual fund investment, it was not the best way to get started. In the last bull market, infrastructure as a theme was the driver. However, once the markets tanked in 2008, the sector is yet to ride back into the cycle where you can expect stupendous returns from it. It seems you are emotionally attached with this investment, which is a big risk when investing. If you can hold on with this fund, you can consider doing so.
