Fund Family Update

A new series presenting a synopsis of every AMC. Understanding the fund house & its strategies helps make a more informed investment decision

The mutual fund industry is going through a period of rapid change. And we are not just talking from an investment point of view.

New players have come in and a lot are awaiting SEBI approval. Some fund houses are changing partners while a few are even being sold off. Others have decided to leave behind their days of mediocrity and spruce up their act. Still others are working on changing their business models.

We have decided to carry a series in which we cover every single Asset Management Company (AMC). We believe that it is essential to know about a fund house since investors also tend to make decisions based on their perception of the AMC. And some AMCs may well be leveraging their brand equity based on the performance of just one or two well performing funds. What may not be commonly known is that they do have a few dogs in the line up as well. There also could be excellent performers which may just be short-term blips, going by the investment style and strategy of the fund house. Then again, some AMCs keep coming out with schemes to ride the current thematic wave.

We bring you all this accompanied with facts and figures depicted using graphs and tables. We believe that such knowledge will go a long way in helping you eventually make a smart and informed investment decision. Which is our ultimate goal.

Finally, an explanation of the data tables and graphs here. The 'Facts & Figures' alongside each fund house are given for a better understanding of their operations. The top equity purchases and sales have been taken over a 1-year period (Sep 2007 - Sep 2008). The rest of the data is as of September 30, 2008.

Along with the data, you will find a figure under 'Equity Fund Losses'. We arrived at that by looking at the asset weighted losses in each month from January to September. Based on the above cumulative losses, we have arrived at that figure in percentage.
