UTI Counts Most Stars

With eight of its 33 funds rated five-stars, UTI Mutual Fund becomes tallest in the industry. HDFC, Prudential ICICI, Can Bank and Reliance follow with four top rated funds each

UTI Mutual Fund is the tallest of them all. Of the 33 funds that it manages, as many as eight of its schemes are top rated as per the revised rating released for the month of April. Now this is no mean achievement considering the fact that in March the fund house had only four of its funds rated as five stars. In other words, UTI has around one-fourth of its funds in the five-star category.

Seven of its funds are in the four-star category. UTI is followed by HDFC, Prudential ICICI, Can Bank and Reliance mutual funds. In absolute numbers, all these fund houses have four schemes each in the five-star category. Percentage wise, Canbank and Reliance have 31 per cent of their total funds in the five-star category. They are followed by Prudential ICICI (16 per cent) and HDFC (13.79 per cent). In March Pru ICICI Mutual Fund had the maximum number of funds in five-star category - six. Two of its funds - Pru ICICI Advisor Very Cautious and Pru ICICI Short Term - could not maintain their momentum and were pushed into the four-star group in April.

There is no change in the number of funds in the five-star category for Canbank, HDFC and Reliance from their March positions. Birla Sunlife, SBI, Kotak Mahindra, DSPML, JM and LIC maintained status quo in April. Each had two funds in the five-star category.

As many as seven funds improved their ratings. From three-star in March, Bank of Baroda Gilt PF G fund has improved its rating to become a five star fund. Tata Income (G), Tata Index Sensex, UTI Bond (G), UTI Liquid, UTI Mahila and UTI MMMF Growth gained one notch each in their ratings to become five-star funds.
