HDFC Heads Top-Rated Funds' List

The fund house doubled the number of its five-star rated funds from three in April to six in May to take the top slot. Franklin Templeton is at the second place with three top-rated funds

HDFC Mutual Fund heads the list of Value Research top-rated funds for May. The fund house doubled the number of its five-star rated funds from three in April to six in May to take the top slot.

However, if we look at the five-and the four-star funds together, UTI Mutual Fund takes the lead with 14 such funds. The fund house has as many as 12 four-star rated funds.

Franklin Templeton takes the second place with 12 such funds, followed by HDFC with eight.

At the fund level, there was a lot of action during the month. As many as seven funds gained entry into the elite group, while five funds had to depart from the top category.

Those who made it to the top-rated category include Alliance Cash Manager Inst, CanIncome, HDFC Cash Mgmt Saving, HDFC Children's Gift-Sav, HDFC Equity, Kotak Gilt Investment Regular and UTI Index Advantage Sensex.

Those who could not retain their five-star rating include Canliquid Retail, Chola Gilt Investment, Reliance Income, Tata Growth and UTI Nifty Index.

Alliance Cash Manager Inst and HDFC Equity regained their coveted rating during May 2005. The former got it back after falling to the four-star rating for just one month ever since it has been rated, while the latter remained four-star for the last three months. On the other hand, riding upon the exceptional gains delivered by the fund recently, CanIncome got the five-star rating for the first time. Similarly, HDFC Cash Mgmt Saving fund also got the five-star tag for the first time, after being in the four-star category for a long time.
