What is the difference between mediclaim plans and health Insurance plans?

Mediclaim is a part of health insurance. Mediclaim policy covers hospitalisation and accidental claims and certain pre-specified illnesses up to a specific sum assured. Premium paid towards mediclaim policy is eligible for tax deduction under Section 80D of Income Tax Act.

Health Insurance policies on the other hand are more comprehensive. Apart from medical expenses, these policies also cover critical illnesses, pre and post medical expenses, maternity expenses,compensation of lost income due to accident etc.
