I will turn 60 in two months time. While I plan to invest in the SCSS, I also wish to invest in mutual funds as I do not need an income until 2012.

It is encouraging to come across someone at your age who is still interested in investing in mutual funds. As you do not need money from this investment for a year, you could consider investing in balanced funds such as HDFC Balanced or Reliance Regular Savings Balanced funds. Both these funds have a good performance history and track record. Such equity-oriented hybrid funds invest over 60 per cent in equity, with the rest in debt, which helps these funds earn returns while protecting the downside. Based on your income requirement, you can initiate a systematic withdrawal plan in these funds to redeem units to meet your needs.
