Consolidation Ahead?

Kenneth Andrade says that the management & execution of companies are critically assessed before investing in their stocks. Get more such insights from this astute fund manager…

A music buff, Kenneth Andrade's affair with the stock market started while he was still in college. Working in close association with market players, he got to realise his passion and get paid for it too. After graduating in commerce from Mumbai University, he started out as a financial journalist in 1991, after which he worked for a couple of brokerage firms. In 1994, he moved to Apple Asset Management where he was introduced to equity research and analysis. He also worked with a couple of brokerage firms including Sharekhan. His last stint was at Kotak Mahindra AMC. Today, Kenneth Andrade manages the Standard Chartered Premier Equity Fund, Standard Chartered Tristar Series I, Standard Chartered Imperial Equity, Standard Chartered Enterprise Equity and Grindlays Fixed Maturity Plus III.

Do you see a market crash in the near future?
We definitely see market volatility increase but are not expecting a crash. Going by historical data, valuations are a bit uncomfortable. We are riding the future potential of the economy as it transitions to be one of the significant economies of the world. But there is execution risk. Some of this is not factored into current valuations which is where increased volatility in stocks will get exhibited. We won't be perturbed if markets consolidate at these levels.

What is the strategic and tactical orientation of your fund?
The fund buys into business opportunity early in the curve. We rely a lot on primary research. We earlier bought into emerging ideas and themes that were scalable. But as the markets have virtually doubled, the strategy of buying discovery would enhance the risk. Management and execution risk of the companies is a critical part of our assessment. We like growth and are not looking too intensely at value stocks.

Which are your top sector preferences?
Alternate energy
Financial services, especially NBFCs
We are also playing the consumption space
