Week 48: How long is long term?

Everyone and their uncles seem to agree that you should 'buy for the long term.' However everyone defines 'long term' differently - a few days, a few weeks or a few months. The Income Tax department defines it as one year for equity funds. But from an investment point of view, what really is the 'long term?'
