Is Your Fund Good? Here's How to Check
Ashutosh Gupta explains how Fund Advisor sorts your holdings and what each group tells you.
Where can I see your comments or advice on the funds I’m currently holding? - Kuldeep Kaul
You can see clear advice on every single fund you hold in the Fund Advisor app.
Once you open the app, go to your portfolio from the homepage. Tap the three-dot menu at the top and open the Portfolio Analysis section. If any of your funds need action, the summary page tells you right away how many need attention and lists them.
For a more detailed view, tap the Funds & SIFs tab. Here you’ll see all your mutual fund holdings sorted into groups: funds we believe you should exit, funds where something needs fixing, funds that are good and need no action, and new funds where we don’t have an opinion yet.
Exit. For each fund here, we give you a brief reason why you should exit, along with the estimated exit load and tax if you do. That way you make an informed decision, and the costs don’t come as a surprise after you’ve acted. Tap Switch Fund and you’ll see our recommended alternatives, in order of priority. You can pick one of these or choose another fund, and complete the whole switch in one journey: a sell from the fund you’re exiting and a buy into the one you’ve chosen.
Optimise. This one matters a lot for long-time investors who hold regular plans. For each such fund, we show you what the regular plan has already cost you in extra commissions, and how that cost is likely to grow over the next one and three years, based on the fund’s past returns and the current gap in expense ratios between its direct and regular plans. If the fund itself is good and the only issue is the regular plan, we advise you to switch to the direct plan of the same fund, which you can do right there. If we also have concerns about the fund, we suggest better alternatives instead, just as we do for exit funds, and you can move into one of them in its direct plan. In every case, we estimate the tax and exit load based on what you hold, when you bought each unit and how the tax rules have changed over time. We work to keep that estimate as close as possible to what you will actually pay.
Good. These are listed with notes on who the fund suits, so you can judge for yourself whether it’s right for you.
New Fund. For funds without enough history, we tell you when our first opinion will be available. A fund gets a provisional opinion once it completes its first year of performance.
So in one place, you get a complete view of what you own, what we think of each holding and, if something needs to change, what to do and how to do it.
