Week 48: How long is long term?

Everyone and their uncles seem to agree that you should ‘buy for the long term.’ However everyone defines ‘long term’ differently - a few days, a few weeks or a few months. The Income Tax department defines it as one year for equity funds. But from an investment point of view, what really is the ‘long term?’ What period is long enough to deliver the kind of wealth transforming returns that only equity can provide?
