Now playing: Money Masters | Interview with India's top fund managers

Value Research brings out a brand-new series - Money Masters - where our host, Dhirendra Kumar, will pick the brains of India's top fund managers

Fund managers aren't restricted to their past performance alone. Their investment philosophy, resilience in a poor market and ability to look forwards (not backwards) go beyond numbers and differentiate the great from the good.

This is why Value Research is bringing a brand-new series - The Money Masters - for our subscribers, where our host, Dhirendra Kumar, will pick the brains of India's top fund managers.

The interview series will give us a more nuanced understanding of the fund managers' decades-long wisdom and guiding principles that have helped them successfully manage millions of Indians' hard-earned money.

First episode - Samir Arora | Founder, Helios Capital

Who is Samir Arora
He shot to prominence in the 1990s when his flagship mutual funds - Alliance '95 (an aggressive hybrid fund currently known as Aditya Birla Sun Life Equity Hybrid '95 Fund) and Alliance Capital Tax Relief '96 (later renamed to Aditya Birla Sun Life Tax Relief 96) - outperformed the markets by thumping margins.

Interview overview
The inaugural episode is as intriguing as the subject himself.

On a crisp September afternoon, at 11 am sharp, in walks Samir Arora, the founder of Helios Capital. Dressed in his trademark printed shirt, the celebrated fund manager's effervescence and candour leaves a lasting impression in our studio.

What was particularly disarming was his readiness to speak about his failings. In a world where there is nothing harder than speaking the truth - even more so when there's a lot riding on you (and there is a lot riding on Arora, given his company has just got the nod to start his mutual fund business in India) - he is decidedly candid. During the interview, he even says, "Every mistake has been made," before unabashedly chronicling his list of failures.

In a freewheeling hour-long chat, he also delves into his investing philosophy, stock-selection criteria, stocks and sectors to look out for and much more.
